WALKABOUT MAPS is a one-page collaborative walking map-making and setting-building game for one or more players between 0 and 110 years of age. Grab a pencil, paper, dice, and your shoes and start walking.

You will roll or choose a genre and location, and then as you walk, use different setting-building focuses and themes to stimulate your imagination. When you finish, you will have created a map with a detailed setting you can use in your games, creative writing, or as an adventure to publish or share. You will have created a place that is interesting, exciting, and unusual. Somewhere unforgettable.

The main rules are on the first side of the page. The second side has additional rules for revising, expanding, and collaborating on your maps.

This game was inspired by:

  • Yoko Ono's "Map Piece" in Ono, Yoko (1964). Grapefruit. Wunternaum Press
  • The two-person map game Dungeon + Dragon by Gints Halcejs.

Special thanks to @Rowan, @Aurora, @Rinn, @Malisia, and @Escanor for play-testing and providing extremely helpful feedback, and @Tam and @SageDaMage from the New School Revolution Discord Server for thoughtful layout advice.

If you are looking for a rules-light RPG system for your map, I recommend looking at 2400 by Jason Tocci and the 24XX collection, which should cover any setting you come up with, or if not, you can easily make your own custom 24XX.
